Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 Intenrships with the Department of State

University of Michigan students who are contemplating spending either the Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 semester away from campus should consider an internship with the Department of State, according to Diplomat in Residence Jim Ellickson-Brown.

A total of over 500 internships are available, some at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, and others at Department of State offices in Washington and other locations throughout the United States (including Detroit).

Applications for Fall 2012 internships with the Department of State must be completed by March 2, and applicants can expect a decision by mid-May.  To locate the announcement and begin the application process, interested students should go to http://usajobs.gov and search for “Fall 2012 Internship”.

Each applicant is asked to choose a first and second choice for placement from approximately forty Department of State bureaus participating in the program and to write a Statement of Interest.

University of Michigan students considering applying for an internship with the Department of State are encouraged to contact Mr. Ellickson-Brown (ellickso@umich.edu) for additional information and assistance with the application process.

Students interested in applying for an internship during the Spring 2013 internship are encouraged to go to the Department of State website (http://www.careers.state.gov) and sign on to receive an email alert informing them when applications are being accepted.  (The application period for Spring 2013 internships normally begins in May, with a July 1 deadline.)
