Program Announcement
 The Center for Japanese Studies is pleased to announce a new scholarship program to support undergraduate students who will participate in a study abroad program to Japan. Applications for CJS Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarships for undergraduate students participating in a study abroad program to Japan during Spring-Summer 2012 and Academic Year 2012-13 are now available. Applications are due March 15, 2012.


Eligibility
· Currently enrolled undergraduate students at the University of Michigan in any school or college are eligible.

· Students graduating in May 2012 or August 2012 are not eligible.

· Recipients must participate in a study abroad academic program that is sponsored by CGIS or another school or college of the University of Michigan and that results in academic credit. The recipient must travel to Japan with the program during Spring-Summer 2012, Fall 2012, and/or Winter 2013. Students who are enrolled in CGIS GCC or GIEU course during Winter 2012 and will be traveling to Japan with the course immediately after the end of the term are also eligible.

· Students who enroll in a qualified summer intensive Japanese language program located in Japan during Summer 2012 are also eligible. In order to qualify, a summer language program must teach the equivalent of one academic year of Japanese as taught at the University of Michigan; the recipient must enroll at the 2nd year level or above.

· Independent research, internships, and volunteer activities are not eligible.

· Students who are awarded the Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship in Japanese are not eligible.

Scholarship Award
· Approximately 5-7 awards of up to $1,500 each will be made.

· Scholarship funds may only be used to cover expenses associated with the study abroad program participation, such as tuition, program fee, airfare, room, and board.

· Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit by the Center for Japanese Studies Admissions and Fellowships Committee.

· If you receive a need-based financial aid package for the study abroad program, the acceptance of this scholarship may result in an adjustment of your need-based financial aid package. Please consult the Office of Financial Aid if you have any questions.

· Application form (2 pages)

· Statement of purpose (limit 1000 words)

· Résumé.

· Two academic letters of recommendation

· Current UM official transcript.

· Copy of letter of acceptance for the study abroad or summer language program (if available)


Deadline
· March 15, 2012, 5pm

· All materials should be brought or sent to the Center for Japanese Studies, 4640 School of Social Work Building, 1080 South University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106.

· Awards will be announced in late April.
