In Ann Arbor this summer? Sign up to be a Conversation Circle Leader!

Are you looking for a way to be a part of the university's global outreach?

Take advantage of the opportunity to become a Conversation Circles Leader.

Conversation Circles is a program offered through the English Language Institute (ELI), designed to connect non-native and native English speakers in small groups for a weekly hour of cross-cultural conversations.

Leading a group is a great way to

-- fulfill a community service requirement
  -- broaden your cross-cultural experience
  -- strengthen your resume
  -- explore language learning issues
-- have some "no-homework" fun chilling out with a small group of international students at your favorite Ann Arbor hangout

To learn more about the program and sign up to be a leader, check out our website at http://sitemaker.umich.edu/conversation/

If you know anyone else who might be interested in being either a group leader or a group member, by all means pass the URL on to them. Undergraduates, graduate students and staff are all eligible.
Registration is open now! (Participant sign-up will begin on May 14, so register your group soon!)

We will be holding an orientation session for first-time leaders on Thursday, May 15, from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. Please RSVP either way; if you have a schedule conflict, we'll work out an alternative.

If you have any questions, please e-mail CircleUp-Questions@umich.edu

Thank you!

ELI 391/591 Teaching English as a Second Language Internationally

ELI 391/ELI 591: Topics in ESL (3 credits)
Fundamentals in Teaching English as a Second Language Internationally

ELI 391/591 introduces students to the essentials of classroom methodology and practice for teaching English as a Second Language internationally. Lectures and discussions will focus on language learning and communicative teaching practices for ESL in international settings. Activities include designing and developing appropriate materials and using resources for multiple age groups, levels, and for culturally specific contexts.

We will explore all skill areas (speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary) and examine the sociopolitical contexts of ESL teachers in the world. Additionally, participants will be expected to teach mini-lessons, do reading assignments and observations of other foreign language classes, and carry out a project targeting a culturally-specific context and age group.

ESL teaching needed for Peace Corps experience may be done in tandem with this course. For more about opportunities to teach ESL abroad, see the International Center's website.

Texts for the course: Snow, D. (2006) More Than a Native Speaker, Rev. Edition, TESOL press, and coursepack.

Schedule:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays,
9-12 PM from May 8nd to June 10th
(A SHORTER Course)

For more information, contact Mindy Matice at mmatice@umich.edu or call (734) 764-2413.
