2012 Connecting our World Student Diplomat Video Contest

2012 Connecting Our World Student Diplomat Video Contest

Connecting Our World (powered by NAFSA: Association of International Educators), in partnership with STA Travel, is hosting a video contest to give you the opportunity to share how your study abroad experience made you a student diplomat.

Are you a student diplomat? The world’s greatest diplomats are skilled at listening and learning, not only about other people and countries, but about themselves and their own country, too. Do you have a study abroad story that reflects diplomacy at its best? Share your story through the Connecting Our World Student Diplomat Video Contest.

Video submissions should tell a compelling story about how students can become "student diplomats" while studying abroad, by connecting in a meaningful way with people and cultures in other countries, adapting to new environments and languages, challenging their own misconceptions, and becoming more prepared for school and future careers.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM EST on November 1, 2012. After a slate of finalists is chosen by an expert judging panel, the winning and runner-up videos will be selected through open voting on the Connecting Our World website. The winner will receive a $1,000 travel voucher from STA Travel and the title of "2012 Student Diplomat." The runner-up will receive a hand-held flip camera from Connecting Our World and NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

If you are a student, you are also invited to join our student community at www.facebook.com/StudentsCoWorld which will keep you updated about the contest. If you are not a student, please help spread the word by using the tips and ideas on this page

Luce Scholars Program

Description:  The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional internships for 18 young Americans to live and work in Asia each year.  The program's purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society.  Luce Scholars have backgrounds in virtually every field (other than Asian studies) including medicine, the arts, business, law, science, environmental studies, and journalism.  The annual selection of the 18 Luce Scholars is an unusually rigorous process and a nationwide competition.  Placements can be made in the following countries or regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Eligibility:  Students who already have significant experience in Asia or Asian studies are NOT eligible for nomination to the Luce Scholars Program. Candidates must be American citizens who have received at least a bachelor’s degree and will be no more than 29 years old on July 1, 2012. Nominees should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment.  Graduating seniors, graduate and professional school students, and recent alumni are eligible.

Deadline:  Monday, October 22, 2012.

How to Apply:  U-M students and alumni interested in applying to the Luce Scholars Program must submit a hard copy of the application documents to the U-M International Institute, 1080 South University, Suite 2660. An International Institute committee will review applications, and will invite the most promising applicants for an interview in October. The University of Michigan must nominate students for this award – applications submitted by students directly to the Luce Foundation will not be considered.  Application materials are available on our website.

UM Graduate Student International Resources
Compiled by Bill Nolting, International Center

Graduate students report using multiple sources to create the contacts helpful for arranging an international internship or research project.  These include:

  • Faculty and advisors within your program, School or College
  • Faculty and advisors associated with University-wide units, such as the International Institute and its Area Studies Centers.
  • Fellow students who have relevant experience—ask your department, check lists of students who were awarded international fellowships, etc.
  • Your own contacts, especially if you have studied or worked abroad
Note that many Schools and Colleges have their own Career Services and/or International Offices for Graduate/Professional student services that may be able to provide information specific to your graduate degree program—most of these are represented on the International Career Pathways Committee.  There are also University-wide offices that can provide additional resources.
University-wide

  • Career Center (Graduate Services, university-wide)
  • International Center (university-wide resource for student contacts, information, internships, careers)
  • International Institute (fellowships, including lists of recipients) and I.I. Area Studies Centers (faculty associates, courses, fellowships)
  • William Davidson Institute (funded internships for students in Masters programs)
  • Graham Institute (funding for projects with an environmental/sustainability focus)
  • Rackham Fellowships Office (funding for grad students in Rackham-affiliated Schools & Colleges)
College- or School-specific—note that these tend to serve only their own students

  • College of Engineering (International Programs and Career Resource offices)
  • Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (Graduate Career Services office)
  • Law School (Career office; international office)
  • Ross School of Business (Career Office and Center for International Business Education)
  • School of Information (Career Office)
  • School of Medicine (Global Reach)
  • School of Natural Resources and the Environment (Career Office)
  • School of Public Health (Career Office)
  • School of Social Work (Career and Global offices)
Please feel free to contact the International Center at icoverseas@umich.edu or tel. 647-2299 for specific referrals.  For specific listings of offices that offer fellowships for international internships and research, see our handout / web article on that topic.

Fellowship Application deadline: Monday, November 19, 2012

The Center for South Asian Studies offers a special opportunity to chart your own course in India…
Thanks to a generous donation to the Center for South Asian Studies, undergraduate students at U-M have an opportunity to design and carry out their own fellowship programs in India during the summer.
 ·         This fellowship is intended for non-graduating students who have not already spent significant amounts of time in India
·         The program is designed to be flexible: you contact NGOs of your choice, write a proposal outlining what you want to study and where, design a program to accomplish your research goals, and we will fund the best proposals to cover most of your costs
 ·         Attending the Summer in South Asia Colloquium On Oct 19 highly recommended:

Students For Global Engagement Mass Meeting: Friday, September 21st

Are you a globally interested student?

Do you think about the future of global engagement?

Do you have an interesting perspective to share?

MASS MEETING

Friday, September 21st

5:00-6:00 pm

Mason Hall, Room 3356

RSVP on Facebook (or just show up!)

Born out of the Peace Corps 50th Anniversary in 2010, SGE seeks to continue the legacy by promoting and empowering students to engage in responsible global service. SGE puts on an annual symposium that brings together students, student speakers, presenters, and participants to engage in dialogue pertaining to global service. In the past, this event has been hugely successful with 80-100 attendees. The organization seeks to create a safe space for students to engage in dialogue and to develop cultural understanding in shared experiences through various projects.  It is a great opportunity to be involved in and gain leadership experience. There is no other organization like it on campus! So join us this Friday!

*If you are unable to attend the mass meeting, but would still like to be involved, please email studentsforglobalengagement@umich.edu and we can send you more information and add you to our email list for future meetings.
