Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship

 

About the Fellowship:

In the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg’s experience at Michigan, the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship will allow selected students to take part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. The fellowship will support experiences such as volunteer work with a humanitarian organization like a school, clinic or aid program, or the exploration of humanitarian issues not well understood in the U.S.. Projects should be at least four weeks in duration and take place outside of the U.S. between May and August of the current application cycle. Several fellowships will be made for summer 2013, each in the amount of up to $5000 to cover transportation, room and board, and local excursions made in connection with the project. At least one fellowship will go to an undergraduate student and at least one to a graduate student.

The application deadline is February 22nd, 2013

Rice University is now accepting applications for the 2013 NanoJapan:
International Research Experience for Undergraduates program.
Generously supported by an NSF Partnerships for International Research
& Education (NSF-PIRE) grant, the program seeks to cultivate interest
in nanotechnology among young U.S. undergraduate students, especially
those from underrepresented groups, and encourages such students to
pursue graduate study and academic research in the physical
sciences.Recognized as a model for international education programs
for science and engineering students, NanoJapan will provide U.S.
undergraduates with structured research opportunities in Japanese
university laboratories with Japanese mentors focused on the study of
THz dynamics of nanostructures. The program is well-suited to
engineering or physics students with a keen interest in this area of
nanotechnology research.

The program includes:

1. Pre-Departure Orientation at Rice University

2. Three week Orientation Program in Tokyo that includes Introductory
Japanese Language Classes, Introduction to Japanese Society & Culture
Seminar, and an Introduction to Nanoscale Science and THz Dynamics
Seminar

3. Nanotechnology Research Internship: Eight and a half week research
internship with leading nanotechnology laboratories in Japan.
Potential research host universities include Keio University, the
University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Chiba University,
Kyoto University, Osaka University, Osaka Institute of Technology,
Shinshu University, Tohoku University and Hokkaido University.

4. Re-Entry Program: Includes communication skills and career
developments seminars and the presentation of a topical research
poster on the summer internship at the Rice Quantum Institute's Summer
Research Colloquium.

To be eligible to apply for the NanoJapan: International Research
Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program student's must be:

- Currently enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate student at a
U.S. institution of higher education;
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
- Currently in your freshman or sophomore year;
- In good academic standing and not currently under any academic
suspension or other disciplinary action at your home university;
- Able to express a demonstrated interest in the field of
nanotechnology as it relates to THz dynamics of nanostructures

All eligible students with a strong interest in physics-related
nanotechnology research and desire to study in Japan are encouraged to
apply. Women, underrepresented groups, and students
from schools with limited research opportunities are particularly
encouraged to apply. Community college students who plan to
matriculate to a four-year university and major in physics or
engineering are also strongly encouraged to apply. No prior Japanese
language experience is required, though applicants should be able to
express a demonstrated interest in the study of Japanese language
and/or culture.

Benefits: Selected participants will receive international airfare to
Japan (departing from Houston), a $4,500 stipend to be used towards
living costs while abroad, and program, some meals, and lodging costs
during the Pre-Departure Orientation, Orientation Program in Tokyo,
Mid-Program Meeting in Kyoto, and Re-Entry Program at Rice. During the
research internship, students will use their stipend to pay their
housing and living costs.

Program Fee: In lieu of a program fee, students will be responsible
for enrollment in a one-credit research course through the Rice Summer
School and payment of all applicable tuition and fees estimated at
$1,282 per credit.

Application Deadline: Online applications must be submitted by January
25, 2013 and two letters of recommendation must be received by

CIBER Undergraduate May Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica

Our program is based at the INCAE Business School near San Jose. Its focus is sustainable development, entrepreneurship, economic development, culture, teamwork, ecotourism, and how to do business in Latin America. Activities include company tours, white-water rafting, visiting an active volcano and nature hiking.  In free time students typically visit local beaches or enjoy outdoor activities.

Attending our program is a unique experience for students to visit companies and learn from faculty who have first hand business experience. Students are able to ask questions and learn in a hands on environment.

We will have the opportunity to send up to 10 students to India this summer through the Khorana Program.  We are working in placements for small groups of students from UM and the other partner schools in the CIC and Georgetown to go to India and conduct research in biotechnology, global health, and engineering. 

Students should be able to have airfare and housing covered and receive a stipend, still working on the amount.  I will be in charge of forwarding applications. Students with research experience will be more competitive.

UM-UROP Program in Khorana - FAQs

Which Indian cities offer placements?

Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and outside major cities:
Punjab and Vellore.

The web site says that host organizations arrange housing - what type
of housing is this? (e.g. homestay, hotel/hostel, dormitory at the
host organization)

Housing will be hostels or dormitories.

If I am an undergraduate majoring in International Studies with a
concentration in Global Health, would I be eligible for this program?
(This major offers coursework centering around anthropology, history,
and politics of health issues, with less emphasis on the hard sciences
or public health research methods. I see under #9 on the application
that students can note "Public Health" as a broad field of study, but
I'm not sure whether or not these students would be a good fit for the
Khorana program.)

Students with an interest in global health would be eligible, and the
Khorana program will seek a posting for this student.

There will be an effort to place all the out-going students.

Am I correct in my reading of the materials that funding for airfare
and stipends is awarded through a competitive application process and
is not guaranteed? When would students find out whether or not they
have been awarded this support?

Yes, these funding options are based on a competitive process.  For
funding considerations, a student’s GPA and a thoughtfully crafted
research statement are two key elements of the application package.
GPA is not the only decision point, but students should demonstrate
that they are highly talented.

Scholarships are offered up to $5,000 per semester and are not limited to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study.  FEA awards funds to students planning to study abroad on academically rigorous programs with a preference for underrepresented students.

Students must have all materials - application form, financial aid form, unofficial or official transcript, and 1 recommendation - submitted by that date.  Application materials submitted after January 18 will not be accepted.

Global Course Connections provide a way for students to expand their educational horizons by taking a course here on campus, then traveling with their professor to a field site where they can get a hands-on, short-term experience to deepen their understanding of the subject.

The mission of Global Health Corps is to mobilize a global community of
emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. We offer yearlong
fellowships with established non-profit or government agencies in Malawi,

for specific jobs that match their interests and skills, from project
management positions to monitoring and evaluation, engineering,
communications, and beyond.

Global Health Corps is an amazing opportunity to get a year of field

Call for Proposals: 2013 Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowship

2013 Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowship

 DEADLINE: December 3, 2012 by 5:00 PM

The Center for European Studies and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies are offering students summer grants of $5,000 to work on issues of European integration, broadly defined. Student grantees will conduct research leading to the writing of a paper on a relevant topic of their choosing.

It is expected that during the spring and/or summer of 2013 the grantees, in consultation with their faculty advisor(s), will devote twelve weeks of full time work to their projects. This is not a travel grant.

Fellows may be invited to attend the European Studies Proseminar: Teaching European History After the Global Turn (EURO 600.001/HIST 698.001) offered in Winter 2013; and to contribute to selected outreach activities organized by CES at local high schools, colleges, and universities. They will be invited to present the preliminary results of their research at a public event held in Fall 2013.

Students in professional schools and graduate programs are eligible to apply. The fellowship is limited to returning students. Students in the last year of terminal degree programs are not eligible.

Applicants should submit the 2013 Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowship Application (available at www.ii.umich.edu/ces) and a 2-3 page proposal describing the project they intend to carry out, including its topic, aims, method, and anticipated scholarly contribution. They should also indicate the period in which they will be conducting full time work on their project. A letter of recommendation from a University of Michigan faculty member (preferably the student’s advisor), a current transcript (or permission for CES to electronically access it), and current CV should accompany the proposal.

Full-year scholarship includes round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, living stipend, and program-related travel costs in Germany.
