Ford School Grad Angela Wyse To Discuss Application Process for Pickering Fellowship

University of Michigan and Ford School alum Angela Wyse will share insights on the application process for the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship, which is awarded to 40 undergraduate students each year and provides $100,000 in funding for a master’s degree and two paid summer internships with the Department of State.  In return, recipients agree to serve as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO) with the Department of State for a minimum of three years.

Originally from Tecumseh, Michigan, Angela Wyse received her B.A. in Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in 2010.  Following completion of her master’s degree program at Harvard University as a Pickering Fellow, she joined the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer in June. 

Having completed the orientation class for new Foreign Service Officers and additional training in Washington, she is en route to her first overseas assignment as Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Pickering Undergraduate and Graduate Fellowship Program seeks
outstanding university juniors, seniors, and graduates who are
U.S..citizens; who have financial need; who represent the ethnic,
social, and geographic diversity and talents of our population; who
have majors in international relations, economics, business, and
political science; and who are interested in pursuing a career as a
Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State.

While freshmen and sophomores are ineligible to apply now, they are
welcome to attend this meeting, which may help them to plan their
future studies to strengthen their competitive qualifications when
they are later eligible to apply.   Please also note that the State
Department is especially interested in students majoring in critical
languages and area studies (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi/Urdu, North Asia,
Japan, Korea, SE Asia, South Asia, Pacific Islands, and the Mideast)
that support the Department’s current and anticipated skills needs.

Interested students are encourage to review the attached announcement
for the 2013 Pickering Undergraduate and Graduate Foreign Affairs
Fellowship Program, which includes links to the application and
associated instructions; to the Pickering Facebook site; and to the
Pickering Twitter site.  Interested student are also encouraged to
"like" the Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program's Facebook
page so that they can receive all program announcements and updates.

Led by Ambassador James Gadsden of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and
Diplomat in Residence Jim Ellickson-Brown, this program will include
an overview of the Foreign Service and the Pickering Fellowships,
advice on how to prepare a strongly competitive application package
and avoid common mistakes that could harm their candidacy, and a
Q-and-A session on Foreign Service work, life, and benefits and other
topics of interest to participants.
