European Union Study Abroad Program

This
year’s program theme is,
“The
EU as a Global Actor"
·
Students earn 3 hours of upper-division political
science credit and experience firsthand the EU in the heart of Europe. Attendance at all seminars and program
activities is mandatory and all students will be required to submit a 15-page
paper related to the theme of this year’s seminar, due June 15, 2012.

This highly concentrated program involves a
combination of visits to EU Parliament, Commission and Council, NATO, the ICC,
the U.S. Mission to the EU and other international institutions, seminars and
cultural excursions.
- Most of last year’s students were
from the University of Michigan.

Students stay at the Irish College (www.leuveninstitute.eu) in the heart
of Leuven, one of Europe’s oldest university towns, renowned for its blend of
medieval and contemporary architecture.
- Eligibility for
the program is the satisfactory completion of a course in either
Comparative or International Politics.
- Program
costs cover accommodation (including breakfast), tuition fees and entrance
costs associated with cultural activities.
It is anticipated that they will be approximately $2,200. Expenses
such as train and subway fares within Belgium, are relatively small and
are paid for by program participants as they are incurred. Students are responsible for travel to
and from Leuven (15 minutes by train from Brussels International Airport),
all meals, except breakfast, and any personal spending.

The 2012 program director is Stephen Brooks, Director
of the University of Michigan’s Ottawa Internship Program and Adjunct Professor
of Political Science, University of Michigan
