Register by February 3 | UC 286 Engaged Learning Abroad

A 1-credit reflective learning seminar that supports integrative intercultural learning for UM students currently studying abroad.

Class sessions are held using Google Hangout and scheduled based on student availability.
Request to register by February 3rd.

Course begins the week of February 10th, and will conclude by April 20th.

This course offered by the UM Center for Global and Intercultural Study explores the processes of transitioning to a new cultural context, adapting and engaging abroad.  Through guided reflections and a brief group project you will explore strategies to engage locally—socially and academically—while learning how to articulate what you are learning along the way. This course allows students to reflect on their intercultural experiences while they are engaging in their global program, while co-learning with students studying in other parts of the world.  Students will process lessons learned and analyze their personal development from before, during and after their programs.  Developing and articulating skills learned abroad will allow students to utilize individual transformation for their personal, career and academic interests. Coursework is conducted with online sharing platforms.

Monday, Jan 27 | Orientation for Winter Semester Conversation Circles Program

Are you looking for a way to be a part of the university's global outreach? Take advantage of the opportunity to become a Conversation Circles Leader.

Conversation Circles is a program offered through the English Language Institute (ELI), designed to connect non-native and native English speakers in small groups for a weekly hour of cross-cultural conversations.

Leading a group is a great way to:
  • fulfill a community service requirement
  • broaden your cross-cultural experience
  • strengthen your resume
  • explore language learning issues
  • have some "no-homework" fun chilling out with a small group of international students at your favorite Ann Arbor hangout
To learn more about the program and sign up to be a leader, check out our website at http://sitemaker.umich.edu/conversation/

If you know anyone else who might be interested in being either a group leader or a group member, by all means pass the URL on to them. Undergraduates, graduate students and staff are all eligible.
Registration is open now! (Participant sign-up will begin on January 27, so register your group soon!)

We will be holding an orientation session for first-time leaders on Monday, January 27, from 4 - 5 pm. Please RSVP either way; if you have a schedule conflict, we'll work out an alternative.

Apply by February 17 | Wallenberg Summer Travel Awards (funding for service-oriented projects abroad)

Purpose
The Executive Committee of the Wallenberg Endowment is sponsoring the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Awards. While a student at the University of Michigan in the 1930s, Raoul Wallenberg traveled across North America to observe and learn from people of all kinds on their own terms. This experience helped him understand the human condition and shaped his life-long concern for human dignity and humanitarian values. His heroic efforts to rescue the surviving Jews of Budapest are an inspiring demonstration of how one individual can make a difference, even under the most dire circumstances.

In the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg's experience at Michigan, the Wallenberg International Summer Travel Award will allow selected students to take part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. The award will support such experiences as, for instance, volunteer with a humanitarian organization such as a school, clinic, or aid program, or the exploration of humanitarian issues not well understood in the United States.

Projects should be at least four weeks in duration and take place outside of the U.S. between May and August of the current application cycle. The University's international travel policies will be followed.

Awards
A total of five awards will be given this year to cover transportation, room and board, and local excursions made in connection with the project:

Four undergraduate awards of $2,000 each
One Bagramian Award ($2,500) for a graduate student pursuing a project related to the field of public health

The application deadline is February 17, 2014 by 11:59 PM.

For more information and for the application, please visit MCompass.
