UM-CGIS STUDY ABROAD DEADLINES FOR SPRING/SUMMER & FALL 2012

Upcoming Internship Abroad Deadlines

IAESTE Engineering & Science Internships (for undergraduate & graduate students)

·         Friday, January 6 deadline--Applications are now being accepted for IAESTE United States' 2012 internship placement program.  Each year, IAESTE United States connects students in technical fields of study to paid internship opportunities in over 40 countries on six continents.   Internships are usually 8 to 12 weeks in length during the summer, but programs can be extended for up to 1 year
·         To be eligible to apply for an IAESTE internship, students must be enrolled in a technical field of study (engineering, science, technology, mathematics, architecture, etc.) at a U.S. university, be between the ages of 19 and 30, have at least sophomore level standing, and be a member of IAESTE United States (students can join as part of the application process).  Graduate students and non-US citizens are also eligible to apply.

UM-Cultural Vistas INTERNSHIPS IN ARGENTINA, CHILE, and SPAIN

U-M Summer Internships in INDIA (for continuing undergraduates): CSAS Summer in South Asia Program—Apply by January 30th, 2012
·         Monday, Jan. 30 is the initial application deadline.  Funding is provided by U-M’s Center for South Asian Studies.

Two summer research opportunities in Germany (German not required)--apply by Jan. 31

o   Opportunities for undergrads, recent grads, and graduate students; no citizenship requirements; stipend provided

o   Opportunities for undergraduate students; US and Canadian citizens only; program fee, but scholarships available

AIESEC-UM INTERNSHIP & WORK ABROAD PROGRAMS (for both continuing and graduating students)
Deadline has not been announced, but typically falls in late January.  Internships offered worldwide.  Most are paid.

Ross School of Business CIBER International Internship Program – App due Feb 2nd
·         Internships will be offered in France (and French-speaking countries) as well as Turkey.  Students from all schools and colleges are eligible to apply.
·         Feb. 2, 2012 is the application deadline.

BUNAC WORK ABROAD PROGRAMS (for both continuing and graduating students)
·         The BUNAC program offers work permits for Ireland, France, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and an Internship in Britain option.   Some programs (Ireland & Canada) have a deadline based on student status, i.e. graduates in summer 2012 have only until the end of the year to participate.  Eligibility for the Australia and New Zealand programs is based on age.

Volunteering Abroad
·         There are many options for volunteering abroad, especially in Africa, Asia, Latin America and some other regions.  In fact, there are so many we recommend asking us for advice!  Deadlines typically are February-March.

Nanotechnology research opportunities in Japan

Rice University is now accepting applications for the 2012 NanoJapan:

International Research Experience for Undergraduates program.

Generously supported by an NSF Partnerships for International Research & Education (NSF-PIRE) grant, the program seeks to cultivate interest in nanotechnology among young U.S. undergraduate students, especially those from underrepresented groups, and encourages such students to pursue graduate study and academic research in the physical sciences.Recognized as a model for international education programs for science and engineering students, NanoJapan will provide U.S.
undergraduates with structured research opportunities in Japanese university laboratories with Japanese mentors focused on the study of THz dynamics of nanostructures.

The program includes:

1. Pre-Departure Orientation at Rice University

2. Three week Orientation Program in Tokyo that includes Introductory Japanese Language Classes, Introduction to Japanese Society & Culture Seminar, and an Introduction to Nanoscale Science and THz Dynamics Seminar

3. Nanotechnology Research Internship: Eight and a half week research internship with leading nanotechnology laboratories in Japan.
Potential research host universities include Keio University, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Chiba University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Osaka Institute of Technology, Shinshu University, Tohoku University and Hokkaido University.

4. Re-Entry Program: Includes the communication skills and career developments seminars and the presentation of a research poster at the Rice Quantum Institute's Summer Research Colloquium.

To be eligible to apply for the NanoJapan International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program you must be:
- Currently enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate student at a US institution of higher education;
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
- Currently in your freshman or sophomore year;
- In good academic standing and not currently under any academic suspension or other disciplinary action at your home university;
- Able to express a demonstrated interest in the field of nanotechnology as it relates to THz dynamics of nanostructures

All eligible students with a strong interest in the field of physics-related nanotechnology research and desire to study in Japan are encouraged to apply. Women, underrepresented groups, and students from schools with limited research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply. Community college students who plan to matriculate to a four-year university and major in physics or engineering are also strongly encouraged to apply. No prior Japanese language experience is required, though applicants should be able to express a demonstrated interest in the study of Japanese language and/or culture.

Benefits: Selected participants will receive international airfare to Japan (departing from Houston), a $4,500 stipend to be used towards living costs while abroad, and program, some meals, and lodging costs related to the Pre-Departure Orientation, Orientation Program in Tokyo, Mid-Program Meeting in Kyoto, and Re-Entry Program at Rice. In lieu of a program fee, students will be responsible for enrollment in a one-credit research course through the Rice Summer School and payment of all applicable tuition and fees.

Experience South Korea through the CIEE South Korea Scholarship Program

South Korea has become one of the fastest growing economic and political sectors in East Asia and CIEE now offers a full scholarship opportunity for university students to experience the country first hand.

Accepted students will take part in the Korea-US Youth Network and experience a variety of events relating to Korean history, language and culture.

No previous Korean language or travel experience is necessary.

The application is currently open and the deadline is Jan. 9, 2012

New English Language Institute Classes available


Please consider for Winter 2012 semester the following courses offered by U-M’s English Language Institute (ELI) for those who might want to learn about teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).   

These courses support students who want to teach in the community as well as those who may want to teach abroad or in the Peace Corps (or other programs—see below).   The ELI will also provide a panel discussion during the first weeks in January to inform students about opportunities for teaching abroad.

ELI 390 Community Service and Language--Education and Culture in ESL Teaching Contexts is a service learning course.  The overall theme of this service-learning course is “Language and Community.”  This service-learning approach enables students to prepare for and reflect on their experiential practice in a local ESL classroom or tutoring program.  For further information contact one of the following instructors and click on website below.  Recommended for students who have completed at least one year of their degree.

ELI 391 Topics in ESL:  Teaching English as a Second Language Internationally is an introduction to Teaching ESL abroad.  The course introduces students to the essentials of classroom methodology and practice for teaching English as a Second Language internationally.  Lectures and discussion focus on communicative teaching practices in international settings and activities include designing and developing appropriate materials and resources for culturally specific contexts.
