Scholarships and Fellowships.
Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
The Boren Scholarship provides opportunities for undergraduate students to study in countries that are generally underrepresented in study abroad. Boren Scholars are awarded up to $20,000 for an academic year.
The Boren Fellowship allows graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies. Boren Fellows can be awarded up to $30,000.

The University of Michigan International
Institute is pleased to announce the availability of Foreign Language and Area
Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students. A FLAS
Fellowship provides tuition support and a stipend to students studying
designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international
aspects of professional studies. Fellowships are offered for the academic year
and for summer. The program's priority is to encourage the study of less
commonly taught languages.
Eligibility
·
FLAS Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents.
·
FLAS Fellows must be enrolled as full-time
students at the University of Michigan. Students graduating in May or August
2012 are not eligible.
Application Deadline: February 1, 2012

FLAS Fellowships are administered by the
Area Studies Centers at the International Institute and are awarded

Robin Abell, Senior Freshwater Biologist
Robin Abell has helped lead WWF’s freshwater science efforts for nearly 15 years. Her work has involved conservation research and planning efforts at global, continental, and ecoregional scales, including in the Amazon, Congo, and Mekong. Robin’s work examines the benefits to freshwaters from protected areas and looks at the nexus of freshwater biodiversity conservation and commodity certification. She also currently oversees WWF’s Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund programs as well as a new initiative to bring together WWF’s globally dispersed scientists through the development of online resources and services. Robin is an MS alum of SNRE.

Brent Hire, Strategy Consultant
This summer, as a strategy
consultant for KPMG’s recently launched Global Center for Climate Change and
Sustainability (in the Netherlands), Brent helped identify key strategic
sectors and developed go-to-market strategies for each of the Center’s 54
national sustainability consulting services. Prior to his work at KPMG,
Brent spent 10 years working as an entrepreneur in Europe, where he founded a
management consultancy. Brent is currently completing dual MBA/ MS
degrees at the Ross School of Business and the School of Natural Resources and
Environment and an MPA from Harvard.

Dr. Rebecca
Hardin, Associate Professor (with research work in Africa)
Rebecca Hardin is an
anthropologist who studies the linked social and ecological changes from
extractive and conservation based activities in rural African settings.
Her global research work has taken her to places like the Congo Basin, East
African highlands, and South African veld. Rebecca served as a Peace Corps
Volunteer in the Central African Republic, working on beekeeping and wildlife
conservation. She has consulted for the American Museum of Natural History, the
World Wildlife Fund, the Royal Bafokeng Nation (South Africa), the United
Nations Forum on Forests, and the U. S. State Department and has served as an
elected member of the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force steering committee.

Come learn about the wide range of international careers that are associated with the field of Information. The information industry is rapidly growing and encompasses career opportunities including international development to consulting to librarianship to data analysis to web design and usability.

Dr. Joyojeet Pal, UM School of Information Faculty
Joyojeet Pal is a junior faculty member at the School of Information. His research is primarily on assistive technology use in the developing world, and his teaching centers around issues of technology and international development. In the past he has worked and conducted research in Brazil, India, Rwanda and Sierra Leone, as well as overseen research throughout the Latin American Region.
Ted McCarthy, Microsoft Research India – Summer 2011 Intern
Ted is a second-year School of Information master’s student specializing in Information Analysis and Retrieval and Information Economics for Management. He spent the summer in Bangalore, India in an internship conducting research in the Technology for Emerging Markets group at Microsoft Research. He studied the use of assistive technologies, and particularly the ways in which the visually impaired population in India uses screen reader software, and how to expand the use of low-cost or free screen readers within India. Ted also spent time in a hospital in Delhi on an emergency visit, so if people would like, will happily discuss certain logistical aspects of medical emergencies abroad, and the many merits of purchasing travel insurance. Ted has experience traveling in various other parts of the world, and has taught English in Turkey as well, so is willing to discuss other points on travel/work/life abroad as well.
Gurpreet Rana, Global Health Coordinator, UM Taubman Health Sciences Library
As Global Health Coordinator for the Taubman Health Sciences Library (a relatively new position), Gurpreet is engaged in creating instructional programs, collaborating with schools, center and departments in global health research, and investigating the role of information in global health initiatives. Gurpreet promotes the Library's role in our increasingly global university by identifying, coordinating, and creating awareness of the wide range of Library resources and services in support of U-M’s growing global health study and research community and promotes Library partnerships to advance U-M’s global health efforts. In addition to collaborating with U-M’s global engagement community, Gurpreet has provided information skills training and research consultations for researchers, visiting scholars and health professionals from several countries, including Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, South Africa, China, and India.
Sara Sterkenburg, United States Embassy/National Museum of Art in La Paz, Bolivia Intern
Sara is a second semester student at the School of Information, specializing in Archives and Records Management. This past summer , Sara traveled to La Paz, Bolivia to work as an archival and museum intern with the National Museum of Art, and alongside the U.S. Embassy there. Her job was to create a digital archive of the history of the museum, as preserved through news and media records.
