BASIC INFO
Are you a U.S. citizen college student interested in virtually interning with the U.S. Department of State and other federal agencies?  If so, apply to a Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) eInternship position on USAJobs.gov July 2-20.  276 unique projects and 450+ positions available this year!  Resume, transcript, and statement of interest required.  eInternships are unpaid and do not require a security clearance.  Selected eInterns spend 10 hours per week contributing to projects for an office or section from September 2013 through April 2014.  Check out the available projects: http://www.state.gov/vsfs/209292.htm.

MORE DETAILED INFO

The Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) program is the U.S. Department of State’s virtual eInternship program for U.S. citizen college students to apply to contribute to the work carried out by the State Department, U.S. Agency for International development, Broadcasting Board of Governors, and the Departments of Commerce and Agriculture.  By committing ten hours per week from September through April, selected eInterns will play an important role in advancing the federal government’s reach in diplomacy, development, journalism, trade, and agriculture initiatives.

This year we have 276 available projects to work on.  Last year, the 2012-2013 eInternship class consisted of 343 students from all regions studying a variety of majors who worked on projects focused on research, social media, website design, data visualization, reporting, teaching, and a plethora of other areas.  Interested undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students can apply to up to three new positions July 2-20, 2013 on USAJobs.  Available positions will be posted on state.gov/vsfs at the end of June.  Interviews will be conducted in August and students will be notified in early September if there is a match.  Security clearances are not required.

Selected eInterns will be invited to join a closed online community and will receive recognition for successfully completing an eInternship from the State Department.

Upcoming deadline for internships with the U.S. Department of State - July 1st (Winter 2014 Internships)

Did you know that the U.S. Department of State accepts interns (in Washington, D.C. and abroad) during the academic year, too?
See the email announcement below from Diplomat-in-Residence Jim Ellickson-Brown, about the upcoming July 1st deadline for internships that will take place during the Winter 2014 semester. The deadline for Summer 2014 internships will be November 1st.

To find out more, view the Student Internship Program brochure here.

We would strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Diplomat-in-Residence's offer to answer questions and assist with applications!

----------
The application deadline for applying is quite early (July 1) due to the fact that all interns with the Department of State must obtain a security clearance. Applicants who are selected as either primary or alternate candidates will be notified by the middle of September, at which point they start the security clearance process. Even for students who are not 100% sure they want to do an internship with the Department, I encourage them to apply in order to keep the option open.

I would be happy to answer questions from interested students and assist them with their applications.

Best regards,
Jim Ellickson-Brown

Expedited U.S. Passport Services for Summer Travel

Need to renew your passport in a hurry?  Please see the U.S. Department of State's recent media release regrading passport expediting services.

Also, for those of you in the metro Detroit area, note that there is a Passport Agency located in Detroit.  Please see the following link for further information: http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_4451.html

----------------------

Expedited U.S. Passport Services for Summer Travel

The U.S. Department of State offers expedited passport services to U.S. citizens planning to travel abroad this summer, including families going on summer vacations and students participating in study abroad programs.  While we urge U.S. citizens to apply as early as possible for their passport needs, the Department offers convenient options for those who need their travel documents sooner than our standard 4-6 week processing time.

Expedited passport applications may be submitted at one of over 8,000 acceptance facilities around the country including clerks of courts and U.S. Post Offices.  First time passports, passport renewals, additional visa pages, and data corrections all qualify for expedited service.  Applicants must pay an additional $60 expedite fee and allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Applicants with urgent travel plans may apply directly at one of the Department’s 26 passport agencies and centers across the country.  Depending on the agency, proof of travel occurring within 14 days may be required.  Please refer to our website for agency-specific information regarding what is required for an appointment.   Applicants must call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-287-4778 to make an appointment at an agency.

Passport expeditor/courier services are private, third-party companies, some of which are registered at our passport agencies and are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of customers. These companies are not government contractors and do not operate as a part of the U.S. Department of State. Passport expeditor/courier companies charge additional fees for their services.  Customers utilizing these companies do not receive their passport any faster than those applying directly at a passport agency.

We encourage individuals needing passport information to first visit the Department’s official website at http://travel.state.gov.  The website contains information about what is needed to apply for a passport, online applications, fees, and processing times.  This information can also be obtained by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778 or TDD/TTY at 1-888-874-7793.
