Apply by Jan 3 (info session on 12/12) | Design for Global Development in Africa, Summer 2014

Attention students interested in co-creative design, immersion at an international field site, and appropriate technologies:

The Design for Global Development: African Immersion and Design Ethnography Experience program is now accepting applications.  This program consists of a summer fieldwork experience in Ethiopia, Ghana, or Kenya to inform a project for a follow-on design course in Fall 2014.

THERE WILL BE AN INFORMATION SESSION FOR THIS PROGRAM ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12th at 3PM. Located in the Chrysler Center room 151 on North Campus.

This opportunity is open to engineering and non-engineering students with senior or Master's level standing as of Fall 2014. Mechanical and biomedical engineering students are strongly encouraged to apply, but students of all disciplines with an interest in international development, global technologies, and user-centered design will be considered.

Latin America & Africa

Come hear from International Center Peer Advisors and a UHS Travel Health Clinician as they pass along valuable information on traveling safely and on a budget in Latin America and Africa.  

Topics to be covered include:
  • Important information to know before you go, such as passports, visas, student ID cards, insurance, travel advisories, and what embassies can and cannot do for you abroad.
  • UHS Travel Health Clinic – consultations, immunizations, medications 
  • Cheapest and best airfares, including the advantages of student airfare!
  • Travel budget and how to save money overseas.
  • Transportation, accommodations, food.
  • Last-minute options for working and volunteering abroad.
  • Adjusting to life overseas, such a language barriers, women traveling alone, general safety and avoiding theft and other potential dangers abroad.

Global Course Connections Info Session: Kenya - Conversation & Development


Info Session: Tuesday, December 4, 5-6pm

Global Course Connections provide a way for students to expand their educational horizons by taking a course here on campus, then traveling with their professor to a field site where they can get a hands-on, short-term experience to deepen their understanding of the subject.
This year, GCC Kenya will examine the impact of conservation and development, covering both natural science aspects and social science understandings.
Thanks to generous donations, the total program fee for this course is only $500 including travel and site visits!
