More Fulbright Information Sessions

If you're graduating in 2013 and are thinking about applying for a Fulbright grant, we would strongly encourage you to attend one of the upcoming Fulbright Information Sessions.  While post-graduation plans may seem off in the distance, the Fulbright application deadline falls sooner than one might think (Monday, September 10th, 2012)!  Now is the perfect time to begin exploring the program.

Upcoming Fulbright Information Sessions:

Friday, May 18

Thursday, June 7

Wednesday, June 13

All sessions will be held from 12:00-1:00pm in room 2609 SSWB. Laptops are welcome and encouraged.

Description: The purpose of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries. The U.S. Department of State makes Fulbright fellowships available to approximately 1,700 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English, or train in the creative arts in more than 135 countries worldwide.

The competition is administered at U-M through the International Institute. At the information session, a U-M Fulbright Program Advisor will describe the application and selection process and provide suggestions for making your application more competitive.

Language requirement: Varies by country.

Eligibility Criteria: To apply for this program through the University of Michigan, applicants must (a) be U-M students, alumni or staff; (b) be U.S. citizens; (c) have completed an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the award; and (d) demonstrate the language skills necessary to complete the proposed project.

Deadline: The U-M deadline is Monday, September 10, 2012.

Advising: Applicants should attend an information session and familiarize themselves with the Fulbright website, paying particular attention to the About, Countries, and Applicants sections. After attending an information session applicants should meet individually with the appropriate Fulbright Program Advisor:

  • Kelly Peckens (kpeckens@umich.edu) is the advisor for graduate students, professional school students, and all applicants in the arts.

  • Heather Johnson (hdilla@umich.edu) is the advisor for undergraduate students, alumni, and all ETA applicants.

Summer Opportunities at the English Language Institute

Are you looking for a way to be a part of the university's global outreach?

Take advantage of the opportunity to become a Conversation Circles Leader.

Conversation Circles is a program offered through the English Language Institute (ELI), designed to connect non-native and native English speakers in small groups for a weekly hour of cross-cultural conversations.
Leading a group is a great way to
-- fulfill a community service requirement
  -- broaden your cross-cultural experience
  -- strengthen your resume
  -- explore language learning issues
-- have some "no-homework" fun chilling out with a small group of international students  at your favorite Ann Arbor hangout

To learn more about the program and sign up to be a leader, check out our website at http://sitemaker.umich.edu/conversation/
If you know anyone else who might be interested in being either a group leader or a group member, by all means pass the URL on to them.
Registration is open now! (Participant sign-up will begin on May 21, so register your group soon!)

Also, mark your calendars: new leader orientation will tentatively be held on May 24 (Thursday) from 4:00 - 5:00 pm, in 411 West Hall.
Please RSVP either way; if you have a schedule conflict, we'll work out an alternative.

If you have any questions, please e-mail CircleUp-Questions@umich.edu Thank you!

Additional job opportunity:

The English Language Institute (ELI) seeks paid undergraduate consultants in the Summer term. Consultants will provide oral and written feedback in practice teaching events in a course taught by ELI and CRLT for prospective GSIs whose undergraduate education was not in the medium of English. More details, contact information, and application instructions are available at
which describes Job #23607, "Program Assistant," on the UM Student Employment Website.

ELI also seeks an Undergraduate Coordinator to lead the consultant team (Job #23608), so interested students are encouraged to consider applying for this leadership position as well:
