The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affair's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the online application is now open for students participating in study abroad programs and internships during the summer 2014 and fall/academic year 2014-2015 terms.  The Gilman Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go.  All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.  For more information about the Gilman Scholarship, webinar schedules, and other helpful resources, including subscription to Gilman Advisor Newsletters, please visit the Gilman website at www.iie.org/gilman. 

Summer 2014 & fall/AY 2014-2015 online applications are due March 4, 2014 by 11:59 pm (Central) 

Students applying for any academic term must meet the eligibility requirements below: 

* Enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited two- or four-year U.S. institution 
* Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term abroad 
* Be a United States citizen 
* Participating in a study abroad program or internship that is no less than four weeks (28 days) in one country and no more than an academic year 
* Applying to or accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for academic credit by the student's home institution 
* Studying or interning in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba 

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).  Since the program's inception in 2001, the Gilman Program has awarded over 15,000 U.S. undergraduates of high financial need to study and intern abroad in over 130 countries from more than 1,100 institutions.

Information Sessions on U.S. Department of State Internships and Foreign Service Officer Test

U.S. Department of State internship applications are due November 1! Diplomat in Residence Michelle Jones will review the process and answer questions about the program.

She will also review the path to a career as a Foreign Service Officer, and provide detailed information about each step in the process, from the written exam to the oral assessment. Are you considering whether to take the Foreign Service Test? Trying to figure out the best time of year (October, February, or June) to do so? Curious about the format of the test, what subjects are covered, how to prepare, and test-taking strategies? If so, be sure to attend this session.

Upcoming deadline for internships with the U.S. Department of State - July 1st (Winter 2014 Internships)

The application deadline for applying is quite early (July 1) due to the fact that all interns with the Department of State must obtain a security clearance. Applicants who are selected as either primary or alternate candidates will be notified by the middle of September, at which point they start the security clearance process. Even for students who are not 100% sure they want to do an internship with the Department, I encourage them to apply in order to keep the option open.

Expedited U.S. Passport Services for Summer Travel

Need to renew your passport in a hurry?  Please see the U.S. Department of State's recent media release regrading passport expediting services.

Expedited U.S. Passport Services for Summer Travel

The U.S. Department of State offers expedited passport services to U.S. citizens planning to travel abroad this summer, including families going on summer vacations and students participating in study abroad programs.  While we urge U.S. citizens to apply as early as possible for their passport needs, the Department offers convenient options for those who need their travel documents sooner than our standard 4-6 week processing time. 

Expedited passport applications may be submitted at one of over 8,000 acceptance facilities around the country including clerks of courts and U.S. Post Offices.  First time passports, passport renewals, additional visa pages, and data corrections all qualify for expedited service.  Applicants must pay an additional $60 expedite fee and allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. 

Applicants with urgent travel plans may apply directly at one of the Department’s 26 passport agencies and centers across the country.  Depending on the agency, proof of travel occurring within 14 days may be required.  Please refer to our website for agency-specific information regarding what is required for an appointment.   Applicants must call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-287-4778 to make an appointment at an agency.

Passport expeditor/courier services are private, third-party companies, some of which are registered at our passport agencies and are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of customers. These companies are not government contractors and do not operate as a part of the U.S. Department of State. Passport expeditor/courier companies charge additional fees for their services.  Customers utilizing these companies do not receive their passport any faster than those applying directly at a passport agency.

We encourage individuals needing passport information to first visit the Department’s official website at http://travel.state.gov.  The website contains information about what is needed to apply for a passport, online applications, fees, and processing times.  This information can also be obtained by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1-877-487-2778 or TDD/TTY at 1-888-874-7793.

Tuesday, February 12, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Interested in combining coursework with an internship in Washington DC or at a U.S. embassy overseas during the Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 semester?  Not able to be away from campus during the 2013-2014 academic year, but interested in a part-time virtual internship that links you to an office in Washington or a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas? 

 

If so, be sure to attend this session with Diplomat in Residence Jim Ellickson-Brown, who will review the application process for the U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program. Also present will be a panel of University of Michigan students who will discuss their experience as interns with the Department of State as well as strategies for developing a competitive application and managing part-time studies together with an internship.  

 

During the session, Mr. Ellickson-Brown will also discuss the Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) program, which provides students an opportunity to work with an office in Washington or U.S. diplomatic mission overseas on a specific project on a part-time basis throughout the school year.
