Drop-In Assistance: Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS Fellowships)

The International Institute will host drop-in hours this week (January 23-27) daily from 1-4pm in the first floor gallery of the International Institute (1080 South University, SSWB).  We are happy to answer questions about the FLAS application process.  

*Please note that we will not be able to read or comment on the quality of a statement of purpose.  Please refer to your academic advisor or the Sweetland Writing Center for writing assistance. 

The University of Michigan International Institute is pleased to announce the availability of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students.  A FLAS Fellowship provides tuition support and a stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international aspects of professional studies. Fellowships are offered for the academic year and for summer. The program's priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught languages.  Awards are available for the following geographic regions: East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea), Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, North Africa, Russia, East Europe, Eurasia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

FLAS Fellowships are administered by the Area Studies Centers at the International Institute and are awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions. The U.S. Department of Education funds these awards under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

Pre-approved Languages

Pre-approved languages include Arabic, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Chinese, Czech, Filipino, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Quechua, Russian, Spanish (graduate students only), Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.  Undergraduates must be able to enroll in 2^nd year level or above.  Some languages have additional level and/or academic program restrictions.  Please check the information packet on the website for specific information about each language.  

Eligibility

Eligible students in any discipline and department may apply for summer and/or academic year FLAS fellowships. Students who are awarded academic year fellowships will be required to take the language of award in both terms, as well as a related area studies course each term.

·           All FLAS Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

·           Students graduating in May or August 2012 are not eligible.

·           Academic Year FLAS Fellows must be enrolled as full-time students at the University of Michigan.

·           Summer FLAS Fellows must enroll in an approved summer intensive language program that teaches the equivalent of one academic year of language as taught at the University of Michigan.

Presidential Scholarship Program (to Cairo, Egypt)

The American University in Cairo holds an annual scholarship program to study at their school called the Presidential Scholars Program.  The program is a one year fellowship for recent graduates from American undergraduate colleges and universities that combines work experience at an international university with the opportunity to learn Arabic and experience life in Cairo – the bustling, vibrant center of Middle Eastern culture.

Scholars are placed in key offices throughout the University’s administration and in the Desert Development Center, a non-profit research center dedicated to sustainable land development.

No prior experience in Arabic is required for the program, and students with little or no experience in the Middle East are especially encouraged to apply. The application for the coming year is due January 31, 2012 and applicants will be reviewed and short-listed by early March with final notifications sent by mid-March. Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA)

Award Description:  The Rackham Graduate School announces 2012 Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA) to support doctoral and master’s students conducting degree-related research outside the United States and Puerto Rico.  The grant is intended to defray the costs of conducting clearly defined research projects that are directly related to the applicant’s dissertation or thesis.  The maximum award amount is $10,000.

Eligibility:  Doctoral students must reach candidacy by September 2012 and have an approved dissertation topic.  Students in master’s programs must be engaged in a non-course related research project required for their degree.  Students of any citizenship may apply.  Students may not apply exclusively for language training, but may submit proposals that combine language study with research.  Students with external research fellowship support may apply, but must demonstrate convincing need for additional funding.  Students who have previously received a Rackham International Research Award are ineligible. 

Deadline:  Applications should be submitted by Thursday, February 2, 2012.

Child Family Health International (CFHI) is a longstanding non-profit organization that offers internships in clinical health settings in Latin American, India and South Africa; many U-M students have participated with very positive reports.

CFHI GLOBAL HEALTH PROGRAMS--2012 SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE, 2013 DATES OPEN

CFHI GLOBAL HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS

Never done before, CFHI is offering scholarships for summer programs, our busiest time of the year. These four (4) partial scholarships in the amount of US $1,000 may be awarded towards participation in any May & June 2012 CFHI Global Health Education Program. One scholarship will be designated for CFHI's Opthalmology Rotation in New Delhi, India program and one designated for CFHI's Dental Program in Quito, Ecuador.  All interested in global health are encouraged to apply. Child Family Health International (CFHI) is a nonprofit that offers socially responsible Global Health Education Programs for health sciences students of all levels. Through CFHI participants go on 4-16 week placements alongside local physicians in underserved communities.  Participants rotate through clinics and hospitals, attend medical lectures, and become immersed in the healthcare system of the community.
