Global Information Week

Global Information Week provides events and a venue for students to reflect on globalization and its effect on their lives. The University Library is not only a place for research, but also a vibrant social center, particularly for undergraduates, where connections and contacts are made. Whether it be through student panels, information workshops or international music performances, Global Information Week offers students a chance to connect with the world. This year's GIW is sponsored by MLibrary and the Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS).

Achim Steiner, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, will be speaking at Rackham on Monday, March 11th at 5pm (followed by a public reception).  Please join us!

Achim Steiner, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, will deliver the 12th Annual Peter M. Wege Lecture on Sustainability Monday, March 11.

The lecture begins at 5 p.m. in the Rackham Auditorium, and is followed by a public reception.

ARCTIC INTERNSHIPS

The Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS) seeks applications from undergraduate students at the University of Michigan for internships at three partner institutions in Canada and the US.

Grants of up to $2,000 to will be awarded to a limited number of students. Funding can be used by the student to pay travel and living expenses. These funds are primarily intended for students working unpaid, but if students are being paid, it is possible to receive funding to offset expenses not covered by the host organization.

Award Criteria

Priority will be given to applications from students with an interest in or working on relevant topics related to the Arctic region, and related to the work of the host institution.

Reporting Requirements

Awardees must submit a final report to PICS:

1. A three-page report must be submitted within 6 weeks after completion of the internship
2. Reports should include a summary of the activities completed and work accomplished
3. Reports may be used in PICS or II publications or web sites

Applications

The following items must be emailed by the deadline:

• Completed PICS funding request cover sheet (2013 application form for reference only)
• One-page description of your interest and background in the region, and skills you would like to develop in an internship
• Resume
• Letter of recommendation

Applications will be reviewed by members of the PICS Advisory Committee and staff members of hosting organizations. Awards will be based on the quality of the materials submitted.

Applications are due by Thursday, March 14, 2013 by 5pm (for summer 2013)

Internships for French-speakers: Travailler en France cet été?

If you have very good conversational French (235+) the LSA International Internship Program has several opportunities in France this summer.

1.  Tours, France (one hour from Paris).  Event planning company.
Interns work on planning large scale events and also work at the
events.  Paid position: May 6- July 10.

2. Winery in Pézenas, France (south).  Work in reception, on documents
in English and French, some marketing, run the "salon de dégustation"
and show visitors the site.  Unpaid position. Free housing. Must be
able to drive a manual car. Timing flexible (approx 6-8 weeks).
