CREES Research, Internship, and Fellowship (CRIF) Program Grants

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES) seeks applications from students in REES and REES-focused undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the University of Michigan for grants ranging from $500 to $1500 towards summer or semester-long research projects or internships at institutions in Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Union.

CES Summer Research and Internship Grants

The Center for European Studies (CES) seeks applications from University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students for grants ranging from $500 to $1500 towards summer research or internships. The grants are intended to promote the study of Europe and European integration. 

Application Procedure

The following materials are required:

· CREES/CES summer funding application (available atwww.ii.umich.edu/crees or www.ii.umich.edu/ces)

· Statement of purpose (1-3 pages) including proposed time period, institutional affiliation, your reasons for pursuing the project, and how this experience will contribute to your career goals

· One letter of recommendation

· Curriculum Vitae

· Official University of Michigan transcript

Applicants for research grants may be at preliminary or more advanced stages of their research; applicants for internships should be prepared to identify the venue for their internship in a governmental agency, business, or non-governmental institution in the region. A written project report will be required at the conclusion of the grant.

Apply by Feb 15th - Fellowship for Incoming Graduate Students Focusing on Polish Studies

Call for Nominations: Copernicus Endowment for Polish Studies

The Copernicus Endowment Steering Committee is pleased to announce the Copernicus Fellowship to be awarded to an incoming doctoral or master's level student at the University of Michigan who expects to focus his/her graduate work on Polish Studies. Students may not apply directly for this award but must be nominated by their admitting department or school at the University of Michigan. Departments are invited to submit nominations for the Copernicus Fellowship to CREES. The Copernicus Endowment will contribute $15,000 toward the first-year stipend and tuition.

Deadline: February 15, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Eligibility: The fellowship is limited to incoming graduate students who intend to work on Polish Studies.

Fall 2013, Spring 2014, and Virtual Internships with the U.S. Department of State

Tuesday, February 12, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Interested in combining coursework with an internship in Washington DC or at a U.S. embassy overseas during the Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 semester?  Not able to be away from campus during the 2013-2014 academic year, but interested in a part-time virtual internship that links you to an office in Washington or a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas? 

 

If so, be sure to attend this session with Diplomat in Residence Jim Ellickson-Brown, who will review the application process for the U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program. Also present will be a panel of University of Michigan students who will discuss their experience as interns with the Department of State as well as strategies for developing a competitive application and managing part-time studies together with an internship.  

 

During the session, Mr. Ellickson-Brown will also discuss the Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) program, which provides students an opportunity to work with an office in Washington or U.S. diplomatic mission overseas on a specific project on a part-time basis throughout the school year.

InternshipDesk will be hosting an informational session open to all students, faculty, and staff-

InternshipDesk provides students with custom made internships at Fortune 500 companies in New Delhi, India.  Students will have the opportunity to earn 6 credits from O.P. Jindal Global University, India’s leading private institution.  The course “Doing Business in India” will prepare students for their internship which takes place from June 15- August 10.

During the 8 week internship, students will:

-       Have a full-time customized internship in their preferred professional sector

-       Take a course on the Indian business environment

-       Be exposed to top-level executives from a variety of industries through the weekly lecture series

-       Engage in our cultural immersion activities

Info Session on 2/15: Study Business in Italy this May

The International Summer Program in Management (ISPM-Italy)

Take a course or two in Italy this spring.   

The International Summer Program in Management (ISPM-Italy) allows you to take study in beautiful Padova, Italy. Learn more; come to an informational meeting on Friday February 15, at 2pm in the International Center Room 9 (603 E. Madison Street). 
 
Take one course or take them both. 

The courses are MKT 352: Marketing Principles and Policies and OB 354: Organizational Behavior. Prerequisites are sophomore status for MKT 352 and Junior Status for OB 354; you do not have to be a College of Business student.  The courses are in English, no foreign language is needed. You will take classes from May 6, 2013 to June 14, 2013.

The courses are team-taught half by University of Michigan- Dearborn faculty and University of Padua faculty and are comprised of approximately half UM-D students and half students from the University of Padua and other European schools.  The course content is the same as is taught at UM-Dearborn but examples, cases, exercises and field trips will stress the international dimensions of marketing and organizational behavior. There is no program fee and tuition costs are the same as the course offered in Dearborn.

Space is limited to 20 students!

Students call this trip a life-changing experience.   You will travel with 19 other Uof M students to places you’ve only read about in magazines. Padua is a beautiful city that boasts 16^th century architecture just steps away from the Louis Vuitton store. And you’re just a short train trip from Venice and Milan and students sometimes travel to Paris and Barcelona while they’re there. You’ll work hard in class from Tuesday to Thursday but then the long weekend is all yours to spend how you choose.

U-M moves up on Peace Corps' annual top colleges rankings

For the 13th year in a row, U-M has earned a spot on the Peace Corps' annual list of the top volunteer-producing large universities across the country.

With 93 graduates currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, the university moves to No. 4, up a spot from last year, and remains a solid source of alumni committed to making a difference at home and abroad.

The university also reached a milestone this year, with more than 2,500 alumni having served over the history of the Peace Corps. Since the agency was created in 1961, 2,515 Michigan graduates have served overseas, making U-M the No. 4 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers.

The history of the Peace Corps can be traced back to U-M when, at 2 a.m. on Oct. 14, 1960, then-Sen. John F. Kennedy challenged students on the steps of the Michigan Union to give two years of their lives to help people in developing countries. U-M students accepted that challenge, and a few months later, in March 1961, President Kennedy signed the executive order creating the Peace Corps.

"Every year, graduates of colleges and universities across the United States are making a difference in communities overseas through Peace Corps service," said Carrie Hessler-Radelet, acting Peace Corps director. "As a result of the top-notch education they receive, these graduates are well prepared for the challenge of international service. They become leaders in their host communities and carry the spirit of service and leadership back with them when they return home."

Matthew Wojcik of Grosse Ile, a Peace Corps volunteer, graduated from U-M in April 2012 with a degree in international relations and a minor in environmental science. As an agriculture and nutrition volunteer in Nepal, he works to improve food security and encourage sanitation and hygiene. Wojcik was among the first group of Peace Corps volunteers to return to Nepal when the program was re-established last year after an eight-year absence.

"I'm very interested in indigenous communities and the rights of indigenous peoples," said Wojcik, who was inspired by his sister, a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in Morocco. "I think I'd like to get involved with an organization that works for the betterment and rights protection of such groups around the world. Whatever I end up doing, I am hoping that it'll be something that lets me travel and continue to learn about the world."

Nationally, the University of Washington and the University of Florida outpaced other large universities, with 107 undergraduate alumni from each school currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

More than 8,000 volunteers representing all 50 states and more than a thousand colleges are working with communities in 76 host countries on sustainable development projects related to agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health and youth development.

U-M offers both Peace Corps Master's International and Paul D. Coverdell Fellows graduate programs.

The Coverdell Fellows Program offers Peace Corps volunteers who have completed their service the opportunity to earn an advanced degree from U-M in natural resources and environment, landscape architecture or public policy, with financial assistance and the chance to use their knowledge and skills in community internships as part of the program's requirements.

Peace Corps Master's International graduate programs allow students to combine Peace Corps service with graduate studies for credit in natural resources and environment, education studies, social work and nursing.

Of the 316 Michigan residents currently serving in the Peace Corps, 34 are from Ann Arbor. Overall, 6,866 Michigan residents have served since the agency was created.
