Summer Ecosystem Experiences for Undergraduates  (SEE-U)

Summer 2012 Field Sites (5 weeks, 6 credits):
- Jordan: Amman, Aqaba, Dana, and Wadi Mujib
- Brazil: The Atlantic Forest
- Puerto Rico: El Yunque National Forest
- Dominican Republic: Punta Cana

Learn ecology and environmental sustainability in unique natural settings through applied field techniques:

- Earn 6 Undergraduate Credits in just 5 weeks.
- No prerequisites required to enroll.
- Fellowship funding is available through CERC.

Two Summer Immersion Programs in Germany May/June 2012

Cultural Vistas (www.culturalvistas.org) has partnered with the renowned Carl Duisberg Centrum Language Schools to offer two

short-term summer immersion programs in Germany for university students and recent graduates.

Berlin Language and Politics Program (May 26 – June 30, 2012)

Based in the vibrant German capital of Berlin, this five-week program provides a first-hand introduction to the political landscape of Germany. The program includes a series of professional seminars, meetings with politicians and policy experts, and site visits to nonprofits and government institutions. Participants will also travel outside of Berlin to visit a local Landtag (State Parliament). The discussions focus on current “hot topics” within Germany, including environmental policy, immigration, and European integration.

The fee for this program is $3,500.

Radolfzell Language and Renewable Energy Program (May 21– June 16, 2012)

Based in the picturesque town of Radolfzell am Bodensee, this four-week program offers an insider’s perspective into Germany’s renewable energy practices. The program includes 2-3 guided visits per week to sites throughout a region regarded as a leader in the implementation of renewable energy initiatives. The excursions provide an overview of German renewable energy practices, addressing policy, production, and the implementation of alternative energy sources among other topic areas.

The fee for this program is $3,180.

Kiva Fellows

Since 2007, the Kiva Fellows Program has offered over 400 individuals a rare opportunity to put their skills to work in support of global microfinance around the world.  Applicants chosen for the program serve as Kiva’s eyes and ears on the ground, working directly with our microfinance institution (MFI) field partners in over 60 countries around the globe.  The Kiva Fellow is an unpaid, volunteer position designed to increase Kiva's impact and to offer participants a unique insider experience.

The 18th class will depart in June 2012 and the deadline to apply is February 12th.  For this class, there will be a limited number of short-term placements available for current graduate students on their summer break.  For more information on the application process or to see dates for future classes, please click here.

Fellowship for Service work abroad: Wallenberg Fellowship application now available!

Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship
 

About the Fellowship:

In the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg’s experience at Michigan, the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship will allow selected students to take part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. The fellowship will support such experiences as, for instance, volunteer work with a humanitarian organization such as a school, clinic or aid program, or the exploration of humanitarian issues not well understood in the US. Projects should be at least four weeks in duration and take place outside of the U.S. between May and August of the current application cycle. Several fellowships will be made for summer 2012, each in the amount of up to $5000 to cover transportation, room and board, and local excursions made in connection with the project. At least one fellowship will go to an undergraduate student and at least one to a graduate student.

The application deadline is February 24, 2012

Sessions will be held from 12:00-1:00pm in 2609 SSWB.  Laptops are welcome and encouraged. Description: The purpose of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries.  The U.S. Department of Statemakes Fulbright fellowships available to approximately 1,700 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English, or train in the creative arts in more than 135 countries worldwide.  The competition is administered at U-M through the International Institute. At the information session, a U-M Fulbright Program Advisor will describe the application and selection process and provide suggestions for making your application more competitive.   Eligibility Criteria: To apply for this program through U-M, applicants must (a) be U-M students, alumni or staff; (b) be U.S. citizens; (c) have completed an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the award; and (d) demonstrate the language skills necessary to complete the proposed project. Cross-Cultural Business Communication Study Abroad Course in Japan

A new University of Michigan course  titled "Cross-Cultural Business Communication in Japan,"  is being offered this spring semester.  The course will take place this summer from May 7 to 19, 2012, and is offered as a study abroad program for Michigan undergraduates and graduate students.  The course will feature hands-on activities to explore the dimensions of culture, along with many opportunities to interact with the community in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. 

Thanks to the support of sponsoring organizations, it's one of the most affordable study abroad programs available.  Each University of Michigan student will receive a $200 scholarship through the Japan Center for Michigan Universities.
