Are you thinking of doing an internship or volunteering abroad next summer?

Would you like to go through this process of finding and preparing for the opportunity with a small group of fellow U-M students?

If so, consider applying for the Michigan International Internship and Service Program (MIISP)
  

Through group workshops and individual advising, this International Center program will help you:

 

--Identify your goals in going abroad

--Find the program that best suits you

--Finding funding to support your international experience

--Prepare to live and work in a new culture

--Share experiences while abroad over the summer

--Advise other students when you return next year

--Learn to talk about your global experience in a professional context through creating an MPortfolio

 

To be eligible, you should be an undergraduate who will be returning to campus after the overseas experience.

WhatsApp makes texting or messaging your friends while abroad easy. Not only will you want to be able to message your friends and family back home -- you'll also want to communicate with new acquaintances that you meet on your international journey. WhatsApp is one of the most popular and useful tools to do so! 

WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messenger available for use with and between iPhone, Android, and other smartphones. WhatsApp uses your 3G or WiFi (when available, regardless of whether or not you have an international phone plan) to message with friends and family across the world. Use WhatsApp to send and receive messages, pictures, audio notes, and video messages.

Features: 

• You can send messages to friends all around the world without being charged an exorbitant rate. Using WhatsApp is free!
• It is very user-friendly and simple 
• The display screen doesn't feature advertisements
• WhatsApp imports your contacts and displays those that are also using WhatsApp
• You can share photos, a status, or your location with friends
• It also allows you to send 100 messages a month to friends without WhatsApp for free!

This very straightforward and simple app has proven to be very useful and handy when traveling abroad. While you're there, you can use it to contact friends and family at home while simultaneously planning the week ahead with your co-workers or roommates. Once you return, you can use it to stay in contact with all the wonderful people you met abroad!

Interested in Interning or Volunteering Abroad Next Summer?

Start planning summer 2015 now!

Two exciting presentations on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 chocked full of information about interning and volunteering abroad in countries like: India, Morocco, Peru, Chile, Ecuador and more. 

Apply by October 15 | Teaching abroad programs that depart in December 2014/January 2015

WorldTeach, a non-profit organization that started at Harvard University, partners with ministries of education across the globe to provide volunteer teachers to fill educational needs that the ministry has self-identified. We have three programs that depart right after December commencement, for which we will be accepting applications until October 15th. 

• Namibia: Teach English, math, science and computer technology in primary and secondary schools in rural communities. Departs late December for one year.
• Costa Rica: Teach English in public elementary schools, including bilingual schools, in rural communities. Departs early January for one year.
• Colombia: Teach English in elementary, high school or university in rural and urban placements. Departs early January for one year.

Yearlong volunteers receive:

• Housing (provided by school or host family)
• Monthly stipend
• Visa sponsorship
• Health & emergency evacuation insurance
• Month long in-country orientation focused on teacher training, language and cultural immersion, health and safety briefing
• Mid-Service Training Conference, and End of Service Conference
• Meals and housing during orientation and conferences
• Transportation between training and placement sites
• Professional development through Teacher Quality Program, including mentorship by remote Teacher Quality Coordinator
• Support from full time, in-country field staff
• TEFL Certification available in some placements (optional)

Volunteer Period: Dec 2014/Jan 2015 - Dec 2015

Qualifications: Applicants must be native English speakers, of any nationality, and be between the ages of 21-73. A Bachelor's degree is required at the time of departure. No teaching experience is necessary, but an interest in teaching, and a flexible, mature attitude, are attributes of a successful volunteer.

To Apply: Applications will be accepted until October 15th. Year program applications require a resume, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and a college/university transcript. Start your application on our website, or email admissions@worldteach.org.

Are you looking for a way to be a part of the university's global outreach? 

Take advantage of the opportunity to become a Conversation Circles Leader.

Conversation Circles is a program offered through the English Language Institute (ELI), designed to connect non-native and native English speakers in small groups for a weekly hour of cross-cultural conversations.

Leading a group is a great way to

  -- fulfill a community service requirement
  -- broaden your cross-cultural experience
  -- strengthen your resume
  -- explore language learning issues
  -- have some "no-homework" fun chilling out with a small group of international students at your favorite Ann Arbor hangout
